ON WHERE YOU’RE FROM

The Gold Coast, Australia.

ON MOVING TO LA

I originally started in New York, but after a year realized it just wasn’t the lifestyle I wanted.

ON YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH LA

I love Los Angeles more and more the longer I live here. When I first came I didn’t think it was anything special, but the arts community here is amazing and there is a lot going on. Also, California as a state is so inspiring to me. You can be in the surf, desert, or snowy mountains within a 2 hour driving radius. As an outdoorsy person, and someone who draws a lot of inspiration from my environment, having access to this diversity in landscape and mood is so amazing.

ON WINDOW SEAT OR AISLE

Usually window, but now I’m heavily pregnant I only fly business – and aisle seat so I don’t climb clumsily over my neighbor every 10 minutes to pee 🙂

ON TRAVEL X CREATIVITY

I’m lucky in that I do a lot of destination shoots. Last year I travelled to Columbia, Europe, Brazil and Mexico, all for separate projects. I think moving so much keeps me on my toes, always in different seasons, cultures etc. I’m also hopping across to New York a lot which is generally pretty underwhelming, but fun in short stints to get a quick dose of that NYC energy. I have a kind of New York hangover whenever I leave.

ON SOMETHING UNIQUE TO PHOTOGRAPHY IN LA

I think it’s the environment and the light. Something about the light here in the desert and in the city. It’s got a magical quality to it – might be all the smog.

All the stereotypes are real. Kale smoothies, hiking, Hollywood hotspots. I love that shit  – most of the time I feel like I’m in my own sitcom.

ON FOUNDING VELVET CANYON

Velvet Canyon started as a side project with two good friends and has exploded. It started when we noticed a gap in the market for vintage inspired eyewear designs. It’s only been a year and we are so excited, and surprised about how its blossoming.

ON SOMETHING ‘ONLY IN LA’

Traffic! It’s the only thing anyone complains about here. Also, all the stereotypes are real. Kale smoothies, hiking, Hollywood hotspots. I love that shit  – most of the time I feel like I’m in my own sitcom.

ON SOMETHING YOU RECENTLY DISCOVERED IN LA

I’ve been back in L.A for a bit, so we’ve been going to the Huntington Gardens. It’s an amazing botanical garden. Also, live comedy is something I’ve been going to a lot. Usually I check Time Out to see what’s happening in L.A and then get overwhelmed with too many options.

ON WHERE YOU FIND INSPIRATION IN LA

I love El Matador in Malibu at sunset. It’s pretty dreamy up there. Also a good hike in Runyan Canyon is great.

Something about the light here in the desert and in the city. It’s got a magical quality to it – might be all the smog.

ON GOOD FOOD

Sugarfish for Sushi (best in the damn world) , Bestia, Jon & Vinny’s for Italian.

ON SOMETHING FROM AUSTRALIA YOU NEED A FIX OF IN LA

I miss the beaches from my hometown and northern New South Wales. Theres no way to even get close to that here in L.A.

ON LA IN ONE WORD

It’s such a diverse city, I have no one word that would be enough!
