"It’s off State Highway 6 out of Queenstown. You need a 4WD to get into the valley. The landscape is beautiful, serene and quiet, and there's no one there. I've photographed that quite a bit."

"I like heading out towards the glacial Blue Pools, which is past Lake Wānaka; you can swim and walk and then stay in these A-frame cabins at Wonderland Lodge."

"I always stay at the Sherwood; it's a motel in Queenstown. There's a nice bar, they have bands that play, and the motel looks out over Lake Wakatipu. It’s a bit of a creative hub in Queenstown."

New Zealand-born, Sydney-based photographer Derek Henderson grew up on New Zealand’s North Island, near Hawke's Bay. By the time he’d reached his twenties, a curiosity in people and other places had inspired Derek to explore the world, with his creativity taking him to Australia, France, Munich, Copenhagen, London, New York, and Los Angeles. During these creative travels, he has shot for Vogue, i-D, RUSSH, Harper’s BAZAAR and Purple magazines, and many more. Derek is also renowned for his fine art photography and has released several books devoted to capturing natural beauty. Currently residing in Sydney, Derek returns to Aotearoa frequently to top up on inspiration by connecting with the land and the community.

Photography takes Derek Henderson across the globe. Yet the tidal pull of his homeland ensures Derek always returns to New Zealand for inspiration.
