"The Cradle of Humankind is where the earliest fossils of humans were found. It reminds me of how small we are in the greater scheme of everything, in our history. Maropeng, the visitor centre there, as a museum, as a place of knowledge production, is incredibly designed. There’s so much thought put into how everything is laid out and how you experience the knowledge imparted to you."

"NIROX Sculpture Park is this beautiful space with lots of trees, some manicured lawns, a little dam, and in between all of this, as you're walking, you come across all these sculptures. They surprise you and shock you and make you feel all sorts of things, which is a really fantastic and unique experience. They often have live performances there, and there’s a wonderful restaurant called And Then There Was Fire…"

"There are few restaurants from the Momo group in Johannesburg and I love how unique they are in their approach. Each Momo specialises in specific food. For example, Momo &O in Norwood does beautiful halaal ramen, Momo Kuro in Rosebank has these lovely tapas-style small plates and dumplings, Momo Soko in Illovo has skewers and Momo Baohaus in Greenside does bao buns."

While photojournalist and visual artist Gulshan Khan’s work addresses social justice and human rights, she sums up her message as ‘kindness’. She shoots from the hip and works from the heart in Johannesburg; a multifaceted city to which she loves to bear witness. 

Gulshan is a National Geographic Explorer, a 2022 FOAM Paul Huf Award Nominee, the recipient of the 2020 HIPA Emerging Photographer award, and the first female South African Canon Ambassador.

Gulshan Khan is a South African photographer based out of Johannesburg. Her work centres on spotlighting shared connection and injustice.
