Michael Spiccia’s thriving career has taken him around the world. The award-winning filmmaker has been based out of Sydney, London, and now Los Angeles. Along the way, his work has taken him everywhere from the 65th edition of the Cannes Film Festival — where his short film Yardbird was nominated for a Palme d’Or — to Budapest on a commercial shoot for Apple. Growing up in Perth, Michael’s weekends would involve days spent fishing and swimming in the glittering waters of Western Australia — contrasted by weekdays in a small city which, at the time, had a lack of creative opportunity. But Perth has changed a lot since then, and Michael has since revisited and reconnected with it many times, especially during the pandemic.
