Musician Satu Vänskä was experiencing global cultures from her earliest years. The daughter of Finnish missionaries in Japan, her childhood talent for the violin eventually saw her heading for Germany and a spot with the Munich Philharmonic for seven years. But it was a move to Sydney and a role as the principal violinist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra that has defined her life today, balancing performing with surfing in the coastal suburb of Manly Beach.
